Crochet a Sunshine – No SPF Crochet Pattern

Crochet a Sunshine – No SPF Crochet Pattern

Why everyone needs a tiny sun they can squish.

If you're the kind of person who needs sunshine in your life but also enjoys hiding indoors with yarn, I’ve got the perfect solution: a crochet sun that never burns, never sets and never judges your binge-watching habits.

Introducing the Sun Crochet Pattern – a cute, palm-sized ball of warmth and joy designed to brighten your desk, fridge, gift wrap or your soul (yes, that too).

Hand-crocheted yellow sun with cute rays – a bright and cheerful amigurumi made with cotton yarn

Why Crochet a Sun?

Because:

  • It’s impossible to stay grumpy when you’re holding a sun with a smile.

  • Your fridge is begging for a makeover.

  • Your keychain wants to glow up.

  • And your cat needs a mini sun to knock off the shelf at 2 AM.

What’s in the Pattern?

๐ŸŒž A detailed, step-by-step PDF pattern written in easy-to-follow US crochet terms
๐ŸŒž Clear photo instructions
๐ŸŒž Designed for beginners and confident hookers alike
๐ŸŒž Ombre effect magic using three radiant shades of yellow and orange
๐ŸŒž Rays that look like they were kissed by a rainbow... or just your stash leftovers
๐ŸŒž A finished sun that’s about 7 cm across (the perfect hug size for a thimble-sized hug)

Bright Ideas for Using your Crochet Sun

What Can You DO With a Crochet Sun?

  • Turn it into a charm necklace (yes, really — sunshine around your neck? Fashion win.)

  • Make a baby mobile that brings actual joy

  • Use it as a bookmark – “You’re my sunshine on every page”

  • Hang it in your car like a DIY mood lamp

  • Give it to a friend who’s had a rough week and say: “Here’s a sun. I made it. You're welcome.”

  • Sew it onto a tote bag. It’ll never be lost in the parking lot again.

Made in Israel with Love

This pattern was originally designed in 2017 by Naiola from TomToy – inspired by the real sun over Nahariya, which is beautiful but very aggressive by 9 AM. This sun, however, is gentle. It lets you sleep in, doesn't melt your makeup and won’t make your plants crispy.

The Sun Crochet Pattern is now available FREE below or as a digital download in my Etsy shop – where you’ll also get step-by-step photos to guide you through every sunny loop.

You bring the yarn, I bring the stitches, and together we’ll make the world just a bit more cheerful, one tiny ray at a time.

๐Ÿ’›
With warm stitches,
Naiola

Instructions

·         The sun is made of two flat circles (front and back), each worked in continuous spiral rounds.
·         Rays are crocheted directly onto each circle.
·         To create a soft ombrรฉ effect, use three shades of yellow for the front.
·         Do not join rounds unless specified. Use a stitch marker to keep track.

Front piece (ombre side)

With cream yarn

Rnd 1: 6 sc into a magic ring (6)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)

Change to pale yellow

Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc)x6 (18)

Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc)x6 (24)

Change to bright yellow

Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc)x6 (30)

Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc)x6 (36)

Rnd 7: Rays:

Without cutting the yarn, continue directly to making rays.

  • Ray pattern: ch 3, ss into second ch from hook, sc in next ch
  • Skip 1 stitch from Rnd 6, ss into the next st
  • Repeat around
  • Vary ray lengths by changing initial chains to ch 3–5

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. Block the rays if needed.

Back piece (single color)

With orange yarn

Rnd 1: 6 sc into a magic ring (6)

Rnd 2: inc in every st (12)

Rnd 3: (1 sc, inc)x6 (18)

Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc)x6 (24)

Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc)x6 (30)

Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc)x6 (36)

Rnd 7: Rays

  • ๐Ÿ’ก Tip: The back rays are made so they mirror the front. To achieve this, turn the back piece to the wrong side before starting. That way, the “right side” of the rays will face outward once assembled. Ray pattern: ch 5, ss into second ch from hook, sc in next 3 ch
  • Skip 1 st from Rnd 6, ss into next st
  • Repeat around, varying lengths (ch 4–6 for fun texture)

Fasten off and weave in ends. Block the rays gently on the back side.

Assembly

  • Place the two circles wrong sides together, so the rays point outwards.
  • Use the long bright yellow tail from the front piece to slip stitch around the edge of Rnd 6, joining the two pieces.
  • Stuff lightly with polyfill before closing completely.
  • Fasten off and weave in the end.

Shine On!

You’ve just made a soft, squishy, cheerful little sun!

Use it as a toy, decoration, ornament or even a pocket-sized reminder that you’re a star.
