What do whales, sea turtles, octopuses, fish and sea stars have in common?
They all live in a world that is almost completely different from ours — a world without roads, houses or supermarkets, where some animals can communicate across enormous distances, others can change color in seconds and some are capable of regenerating parts of their bodies.
So, in honor of World Whale Day, let's dive in! 🌊
🐋 The giant with a surprisingly gentle diet
The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth.
Did he became enormous by hunt giant sea monsters or eat other whales?
Oh no, it feeds mainly on tiny shrimp-like animals called krill.
During feeding season, a blue whale can consume enormous quantities of krill. Imagine being the largest creature on Earth and having your favorite snack be something about the size of a paperclip.
A blue whale's heart is enormous, comparable in size to a small car and its heartbeat can be detected by scientific instruments from a considerable distance.
And yet, despite its incredible size, the blue whale is not a dangerous predator hunting everything in its path.
It is essentially a gigantic filter feeder.
Biggest animal. Tiny dinner.
🐢 Sea turtles: the ocean's ancient travelers
Sea turtles are another reminder that the ocean has a very long memory.
The ancestors of modern sea turtles were swimming in the world's oceans more than 100 million years ago.
That means sea turtles were already around while dinosaurs were still walking on land.
They survived enormous changes in the planet's climate, geography and ecosystems.
And today?
They still swim through the oceans with the same basic turtle philosophy:
No rush. I've been doing this for millions of years.
Some sea turtles travel thousands of kilometers during their migrations.
Even more fascinating, female sea turtles return to beaches to lay their eggs and many species show remarkable ability to navigate across huge distances.
So while humans need GPS, maps and occasionally Google Maps saying, “recalculating…”, sea turtles have their own built-in navigation system.
🐠 Fish sleep… but they don't have eyelids!
Ever wondered whether fish sleep?
They do!
But most fish don't have eyelids, so they can't simply close their eyes and turn off the lights.
Instead, many fish enter periods of rest where their activity and metabolism decrease.
So if you've ever looked into an aquarium at night and thought: "Why are you still staring at me?"
The fish may simply be sleeping with their eyes open.
🐙 The octopus has three hearts and a very strange way of swimming
The octopus is one of the ocean's greatest overachievers.
It has:
- three hearts
- a highly complex nervous system
- eight arms
- the ability to change color and patterns
- the ability to squeeze through surprisingly small spaces
Two of its hearts pump blood toward the gills, while the third pumps blood around the body.
And here's another fascinating fact:
When an octopus swims, the heart responsible for pumping blood around the body stops beating.
Which may explain why octopuses often prefer crawling rather than swimming.
Sometimes walking is easier than dealing with the cardio.
⭐ Sea stars can grow back lost arms
Sea stars have another extraordinary superpower: many species can regenerate lost arms.
Depending on the species and circumstances, a sea star may be able to regrow a damaged or lost arm.
Unfortunately, our bodies didn't get that particular upgrade.
🌊 The ocean is not just “where the fish live”
When children think about the ocean, they often imagine colorful fish, whales and dolphins.
But the ocean is an enormous and incredibly complex ecosystem.
It contains coral reefs, kelp forests, deep-sea communities, microscopic organisms and animals that live in complete darkness.
Some creatures produce their own light through bioluminescence.
Some survive under enormous pressure in the deep sea.
Some migrate across entire oceans.
And some are so tiny that you need a microscope to see them.
In other words:
We have explored only a fraction of what is happening beneath the waves.
🧶 A little piece of the ocean at TomToy
And this is where the ocean becomes especially personal for me.
It's almost funny how perfectly the timing worked out.
Right around World Whale Day, I found myself working on a custom order of crochet whales.
And at the same time, my studio has been filling up with even more ocean creatures.
I've recently created:
new crochet sea appliqués
crochet whales
a new set of felt sea turtles
colorful felt fish
magnetic fishing game
And as if that wasn't enough, I even had a little flood recently! Luckily, I was home and managed to stop the water before my craft room has become an ocean club.
At this point, I'm beginning to suspect that my craft room isn't a craft room anymore, it's an ocean club.

But there is something I really love about creating for children.
A handmade whale isn't just a whale.
A felt turtle isn't just a turtle.
Through play, children can discover that these creatures have their own stories, abilities and important roles in the ecosystem.
A fishing game can become a lesson in patience.
A felt turtle can inspire a story about an ocean journey.
A whale appliqué can become the beginning of a conversation:
“How big is a blue whale?”
And suddenly, play turns into curiosity.
And curiosity is often where learning begins.
💙 Why do we need to care about whales and the ocean?
World Whale Day isn't only about celebrating cute pictures of whales.
It's also an opportunity to remember that ocean animals depend on healthy marine ecosystems.
Whales, sea turtles, fish and countless other creatures are affected by pollution, habitat loss, fishing practices, climate change and other human activities.
The ocean may look enormous from the beach.
But for the animals living in it, plastic waste, disappearing habitats and changes in food availability can have very real consequences.
The good news is that children don't have to be marine biologists to start caring about the ocean.
They can begin with something much simpler:
Learn. Play. Ask questions. Notice. Care.
Sometimes a little felt turtle can start a surprisingly big conversation.
🌊 One last ocean challenge
Let's finish with a little game.
If you could spend one day as a sea creature, which one would you choose?
🐋 Whale - travel enormous distances and sing across the ocean.
🐢 Sea turtle - explore the world at your own peaceful pace.
🐙 Octopus - have three hearts and eight arms. Think of all the crafts you could make!
🐠 Fish - sleep with your eyes open and never worry about forgetting to blink.
🦀 Crab - walk sideways and completely ignore the concept of “going in a straight line.”
Jellyfish - float around and look absolutely magical.
