crochet cactus TomToy

If you’ve been following my crochet adventures, you already know I’ve designed three cactus crochet patterns, each one lovingly potted in its own tin pail. These kits are a colorful, cheerful way to bring handmade greenery into your space - no watering required!

But what if you didn’t purchase ready kit? Or don’t have a tin pail lying around? No worries, cactus lover - I’ve got you covered! That’s where my Basket Planter Crochet Pattern comes in - an easy and adorable alternative that lets you crochet your cactus a cozy new home.

So, you’ve crocheted a cactus.
Or five...

The Basket Planter Crochet Pattern
A cozy, handmade pot that lets your crochet cactus live its best planty life.

Why crochet a basket?

Let’s face it—crocheting a cactus is addictive. One becomes three, three become a whole prickly parade. While the original kit includes one lovely tin pail, this basket pattern gives you the freedom to create more cactus homes (and maybe even start a plant-based neighborhood).

What can I use it for?

Besides holding your cactus like a proud crochet throne:

  • Use it to house real succulents (with a small jar inside)

  • Gift it as a set with a handmade cactus

  • Use it as a tiny storage bin for buttons, rings or… secret snacks?

  • Or stack them into a mini yarn tower for your desk

What skills do I need?

If you can single crochet in the round, you’re golden. I’ll guide you through every step, and yes—there’s a free how-to-crochet refresher on my crochet basics page.

INSTRUCTIONS

Crochet BASKET Planter PAttern

Designed to perfectly fit your handmade crochet cacti (and give the tin pail a break).

🧶 What You'll Need:

  •  Cotton yarn in two colors:
Main color for the basket body (e.g. beige)
Accent color for the folded rim

  • Crochet hook size: 2-2.5 (match your yarn)

  • Stitch marker (optional )

  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

  • Scissors

  • A cactus buddy waiting for a new home

💡 Skill Level:

Beginner-friendly! You just need to know how to:

  • Crochet in the round

  • Single crochet (sc)

  • Increase (inc = 2 sc in one stitch)

  • Decrease (dec = sc two stitches together)

Start by crocheting the base of the basket in your main color. Work in continuous rounds (no joining), using a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round.

Round 1: 6 sc into a magic ring (6 sts)

Round 2: Inc in every stitch around (12 sts)

Round 3: (1 sc, inc) × 6 (18 sts)

Round 4: (2 sc, inc) × 6 (24 sts)

Round 5: (3 sc, inc) × 6 (30 sts)

Round 6: (4 sc, inc) × 6 (36 sts)

Round 7: (5 sc, inc) × 6 (42 sts)

Round 8: (5 sc, dec) × 6 (36 sts)
This adds a gentle taper and helps your cactus sit snugly!

Rounds 9–16: 1 sc in each st around (36 sts)
You’re building the basket walls here—keep it steady!

Change to your accent color yarn.

Rounds 17–23: 1 sc in each st around (36 sts)
This will be the folded rim of the basket.

✂️ Finishing:

Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Fold the top rim down (about halfway) to reveal that cute color contrast and give your basket structure.

Pop in your crochet cactus, add a felt base or stuffing for support and let it sit proudly in its yarny new home.
